“Ready to go” or “Immediate departure”: these are two of the potential sentences you can read on the description of the SVE projects. Personally, I believe they are also representatives of states of mind.

I was at a standoff in my life: I was done with the Master Degree, I got my Professional Habilitation after one year of internship and an exam of three months. I found myself unemployed for months and living in a city where I wasn’t feeling at home.

I applied to different projects during those months, but none of them as coherent to my field of studies as this one for which I am here now. Psycological, pedagogical and educational activities with children, as well as community activities with other partner associations, entities, institutions etc.

The welcoming from behalf of SPIN, the coordinating association, has been essential, even while I was still in my home country. In fact, they even found an accomodation for me, so that I didn’t even have to search for it. I feel very encouraged by the fact that other volunteers work in the association, but also in my receiving organization I feel like in a family, considering that all my collegues are older women (in the picture, cakes that a collegue baked for Easter lunch in the crèche).

Another factor that gives me security is the community integration and wellbeing promotion that are developed in the neighborhood in which these associations are. In the picture, one of the hundreds streetart works of the neighborhood. Thanks to these artists, between many other actors, the social houses were made beautiful and well-finished.

On my arrival, togheter with other voluteeres, we have been guided in a visit through the neighborhood. Beside it, it has been very interesting another guided visit, held by the president of the receiving institution. She showed us some blind sides, weaknesses, lacks and still developing projects in the area, such as the improving of living conditions inside the social houses and the relationships between different ethnies.

Spin is one of those associations who, bringing volunteers from all over Europe to such a periferical social houses quarter, thinks globally and acts locally. I had the chance to partecipate in the 10th anniversary of SPIN and other two parties with the others volunteers. This allowed me to feel part of something, beside having fun, of course!

Beyond the Easter lunch, we had a birthday party and the father’s day party in the crèche. I took part in a education workshop for parents and, as march was the month of the book, in a reading activity with partner associations.

Last, but not least, last week I started, together with the president of the receiving association and others partner associations, a training course about peace.

So much happened in my first month! I can’t wait for more!

O testemunho da Camilla

Já tem passado algum tempo desde que comecei o meu projeto SVE, o inverno acabou, a primavera está a começar e com ela novas aventuras, porque aqui na Spin as novidades nunca faltam. Mesmo que já conheça bem a organização, as atividades e a ‘rotina’, sempreaparecem oportunidades de aprendizagem e desafios.

O desenvolvimento do meu projeto pessoal começou há algumas semanas e está a me envolver muito: pensei em dar aulas de português aos novos voluntários utilizando assim os meus conhecimentos linguísticos adquiridos através dos meus estudos e que tenho melhorado através desta mesma experiência SVE.

O do que mais gosto desta experiência é mesmo me encontrar a fazer atividades que nuca teria pensado em fazer: video- editing, cozinhar para um evento de setenta pessoas, fazer divulgação de projetos na rua de pijama (no dia nacional do pijama!) e muito, muito mais. Mesmo que só faltem poucos meses para o final da minha experiência, sigo tendo a maravilhosa sensação do que o melhor ainda está por vir, e não vejo a hora de descubri-lo.

Olà, my name is Sébastien, I come from Montpellier in France. I arrived in Lisbon in September. I´m doing an EVS of eleven months in the association "Boutique da Cultura" an association that aims to promote culture in all its forms. 

I wanted to do an EVS to live a unique experience on the personal but also professional level.  At 26 years old, this is the last adventure I want to live before starting my career. I chose this project to have a complementary experience in the cultural field and thus be able to find a job corresponding to my expectations.

I’m very happy to be a volunteer in the Boutique da Cultura association. The projects we are doing are ambitious and of public utility. I am pleased to be able to contribute to improving access to culture. We recently opened a solidarity bookstore in the Carnide neighborhood. Project that saw the day after several months of preparation in an incredible team and in a great atmosphere.

Doing an EVS is also an adventure with other volunteers from other countries. The meetings that I have been able to do since then have enriched me and allowed me to discover other cultures through them. 

Since 6 months I had the opportunity to visit several cities in Portugal and discover the raw beauty of this country. I have the chance to do my EVS in Lisbon, a beautiful dynamic and authentic city. Through this adventure I have the opportunity to learn Portuguese and improve my English. I still have 5 months of adventure I still want to see a lot of things in Lisbon but also in Portugal, including Porto and the Algarve.                                                                 

O testemunho da Carolina

Chamo-me Carolina, tenho 21 anos e, desde setembro do ano passado que vivo em Bordeaux, França, para fazer o meu SVE na Maison de l’Europe. Somos um total de 27 voluntários, 16 oriundos dos quatro cantos da Europa, e 11 franceses. 

Em julho do ano passado concluí a minha licenciatura em Ciências da Comunicação. Entrar no mercado de trabalho tão cedo nunca foi um objetivo. Na verdade, enfrentar o desconhecido, viajar, descobrir, eram sonhos por concretizar. Um dia, estava no autocarro e ouvi uma conversa entre duas senhoras acerca do voluntariado. E nesse momento deu-se o clique: Voluntariado Internacional. Era o ideal porque conciliava tudo o que sempre quis: conhecer novos locais, emergir em novas culturas, aprender novas línguas. Pesquisei e acabei por encontrar o projeto do qual agora faço parte. 

Confesso que o que mais me cativou foi, não só a diversidade cultural inerente ao mesmo, mas também o facto de representar Portugal, de ter de dar a conhecer a minha cultura e o meu país.

Trabalhar [e conviver!] com 26 pessoas tão diferentes entre si revela-se um desafio diário. Ser fiel à minha cultura, e ao mesmo tempo adaptar-me não só à cultura francesa, mas também à cultura dos meus colegas europeus nem sempre é fácil. Por vezes, aquilo que é aceitável numa cultura, não é aceitável noutra. Saber lidar e ultrapassar essas diferenças é algo que requer jogo de cintura. Mas é também uma forma de conhecermos os nossos limites e de reflexão sobre as nossas tradições. E a dinâmica do grupo é excelente. Foi muito interessante a forma como nos conectamos e passamos rapidamente a amigos. Nem sempre estamos de acordo, mas respeitamo-nos e tentamos ultrapassar as diferenças.

Relativamente ao facto de representar Portugal confesso que foi algo que me assustou. Estaria eu à altura de tal desafio? Lembro-me da minha primeira intervenção – tremia de nervosa que estava. Assim que disse que era portuguesa o entusiasmo deles foi notório. Perguntaram-me se conhecia o Ronaldo e quantas vezes por dia comemos bacalhau. Ri-me, obviamente, expliquei que comemos muito bacalhau, sim, mas que temos outros pratos. 

Dar a conhecer a minha cultura, as nossas lendas e também a língua portuguesa [até porque faço questão de lhes ensinar palavras básicas!] é algo que me dá imenso prazer e que faço com imenso gosto. Por vezes, existem barreiras linguísticas – não domino de todo o francês, mas, como boa portuguesa, desenrasco-me bem. E nunca faço as intervenções sozinha – estou sempre acompanhada por alguém de nacionalidade francesa. 

Algo que não está diretamente associado ao projeto, mas que acabou por vir como uma espécie de arrastamento foi a aprendizagem de muitas línguas. Quando aqui cheguei falava português e inglês, só. Atualmente falo francês, espanhol, um pouco de italiano e tenho-me aventurado na língua estoniana. 

Em suma: candidatar-me a este projeto revelou-se a melhor escolha da minha vida. Existem dias complicados? Sim! Saudades de casa? Sim! Mas não voltaria atrás nem por um segundo. Porque não podemos fugir de novas ideias. Nem de novos começos. Porque no final de tudo, não podemos fugir à vida.

O testemunho da Catia

O meu nome é Catia e estou a fazer o meu SVE em Itália por 10 meses. Este é o meu terceiro mês. Até agora tem sido uma experiência bastante positiva. Vivo numa cidade pequena mas acolhedora. Tenho conhecido pessoas novas e de quase toda a parte da europa, sua cultura e formas de formas de ver o mundo. 

Em relação ao meu projecto sou voluntaria na Cruz Vermelha. As actividades que fazemos é na comunidade, como o transporte de pessoas idosas para centros de dia, de pessoas com mobilidade reduzida para a fisioterapia ou casa-escola, dialise ou nas actividades do dia a dia. Além disso distribuimos alimentos para os mais carenciados, e ainda, duas vezes por semana cozinhamos na sede para todos os voluntários. 

Até agora já viajei para Milão e Roma mas quero viajar mais nos próximos meses.

It was a big step. Big step for me. New country, new people, new reality. 

I have been visiting other countries few times, but never for so long. Never for 7 months. 

Lisboa was somewhere in my head. Yellow trams, Ocean, narrow streets… All of this I saw many times somewhere in the Internet, books, magazines, TV. But this time I was about to see it on my own eyes. 

Two years ago I have decided I will take part in EVS program. It happened just after my first Youth Exchange in Romania (EU program), where I found that something like EVS exist. I felt there huge energy coming from this mish mash of cultures, people, ideas. Maybe it is possible to change my life? To make my dream come true? 

First step: I have changed my job and start working abroad while applying for EVS. However, not every EVS, not everywhere. Only the ones, that I felt connection with. In some I was rejected, in some didn’t even got an answer. And then BINGO! I got accepted in SPIN in Lisbon! Brilliant! 

1st September 2016 I was sitting on the plane to Lisbon. For 9 months project. The adventure have just begun. It was exciting and fantastic and also nervous at the same time. Didn’t know what to expect. I was on the plane to Lisbon, and when we’ve reached the city, the captain said: “Ladies and Gentleman, we have to fly to Porto, cause there are technical issues at the airport.” Nice start I thought. I will see two cities on one way! 

What did the project give me? 

Everything. 

Self confidence, space for me, time, time to think, to figure myself out, friends, new culture, laughter, homesick, possibility to appreciate your own country, understanding how important your family and friends are in your life. But also huge vest of opportunities to try new things: playing Frisbee in a team, cooking for 12 people Polish dishes, to handle with winter without radiator at home ;), to speak Portuguese (even knowing only with words), to drive a car in a foreign country, to hitchhike, to date foreigners, to speak more often foreign languages than mother tongue, to eat tuna!, to eat pumpkin soup almost every day, to perform in front of students and speaking there Portuguese and English, to write letters with fountain pen all night, to live in a tenement house with 7 people from all over the world and see how different and the same we are, to sing karaoke in the kitchen in languages I don’t know. 

My mindset was broaden and I knew If I want to fulfill my dreams, I need to take actions. So I did. And I am doing it and will be doing. I figure out that I want to work as a tour operator representative abroad so I send my CV with my new gained experience as volunteer at SPIN in Portugal. And you now what? I have got that job!!! :D 

Everything happened for something. One step is making another. So have the courage to take the very first step. Not once, not twice, but even hundred times. 

Every time while you are taking the very first step, the whole universe is opening new doors for you! As it opened for me ☺

O testemunho da Joana

Olá!!! Hoje estou muito triste, já termino o meu SVE em Lisboa. Cheguei no dia 1 de junho a esta maravilhosa cidade, onde aprendi muitas, mesmo muitas coisas. Foi no final do mestrado quando ouvi falar sobre o SVE e da possibilidade de faze-lo na SPEA (Sociedade Portuguesa para o Estudo das Aves), e nem hesitei. Como poderia perder esta oportunidade? 

Parte do meu trabalho consistia na assistência ao projeto LIFE Berlengas, entre cagaras, gaivotas, galhetas e roques-de-castro. Uma das tarefas mais importante na recuperação deste arquipélago tão giro, e remoção de chorão, uma planta invasora que põe em perigo as plantas nativas da ilha, é um trabalho muito duro, mas é reconfortante. 

Aprendi coisas novas, como avaliar a interação das aves com as artes de pesca. Embarcar foi uma experiência incrível, a possibilidade de ver aves que em terra são muito difíceis de observar, e conhecer gente com uma cultura diferente. 

Mas, nem tudo é trabalho no SVE. Viver com pessoas de todo o mundo e partilhar novas experiências têm feito deste ano algo inesquecível. 

No principio disse que estava triste porque isto estava a terminar… más estava a mentir, fico cá, o SVE foi uma oportunidade perfeita para conseguir um trabalho na minha área e continuar a lutar pela conservação da natureza.
