Olá! Eu sou Magda da Polônia, sou um novo voluntário no Spin. Agora, eu não falo português (só um pouco), mas eu prometo, vai mudar em breve :)

I arrived to Lisbon right in the middle of the Live it Lisbon project. I am sure I was as scared as excited. Just few hours after my flight I was already helping the hostel team with their work. I immediately soaked into the bubble of international projects and I am extremely happy I will not leave it in the next 8 months, if not more :).

 

My first few days were full of unique and very random tasks, new faces every single day, exploring and getting lost in the working area, neighborhood and Lisbon. It’s been almost a month now, and so far there were not a 2 days of similar work. Preparing a presentation in Portuguese? Delivering an Eurodesk info session? Convincing young students to join European Solidarity Corps? These were just a few of my recent tasks.

Of course, EVS is not only about the work. Lisbon is a very vibrant city and everyone can find something interesting, even if you are not a party animal. I’ve already supported Portuguese National Football Team in the game against Italy, I’ve seen every corner of Sao Jorge castle, I’ve climbed millions stairs, I’ve seen Lisbon from a lot of miradoures, I’ve eaten several types of Portuguese sweets and of course bacalhau!

I am looking forward for the upcoming months and I am very curious what this country and project has prepared for me. With my arms wide open I am ready for the next challenge!

You cannot possibly fit an experience of 9 months in a few lines. It’s equally frustrating as packing and trying to fit everything in a luggage. And all the moments, the feelings, the discussions, the dilemmas, the jokes, the frustrations, the breakfasts and dinners, the trips, the coffees, everything lies scattered in the room with you sitting in the middle numb but so blessed for all that you’ve had.

EVS has been a learning process and most importantly a trip of self discovery and awareness that started way before my first day in Spin. It started the moment I decided to quit my job and find a project. I learned to be open to the unknown, not to be afraid to risk, to be ready for good and bad experiences and deal with whatever i find on my way.

Then, away from home, friends, family and everything that my reality comprised, I learned to listen and question everything that so far had been unquestionably true and correct. Away from everything that had so far defined me I was given the opportunity to redefine myself and explore new realities. And on the way, I found a new home, a new family, new friends and a better version of myself.

So when such an experience comes to an end, you don’t really have another choice. You pack everything in your heart and you take it with you- along with a ridiculously heavy luggage- to your new beginning.

Eu não gostaria de fazer o clássico discurso romântico de final de experiência cheio de agradecimentos, mas vazío de significado. Claro, vou agradecer, mas só mais tarde. Primeiro, queria dizer-vos o que esta experiência realmente foi para mim, mesmo que ainda não tenha acabado.

Ser voluntário não é uma coisa assim tão fácil. Não me refiro, nesse sentido, ao fato de morar em outro país, com outra língua e novas pessoas. Estas, pelo contrário, podem ser até mais motivações para lidar com esses tipos de experiências. Pelo contrário, refiro-me essencialmente ao papel do voluntário em si. Mesmo que aqueles que decidem fazer esse tipo de experiência já comecem com a vontade de encarar o desafío, temos sempre que lidar com o projeto real. É claro que, não fazendo parte dum contexto de trabalho formal, o voluntário não tem uma atividade fix(ics)a, mas, pelo contrário, as atividades mudam de dia a dia. Neste sentido, a dificuldade está em encontrar um papel, um pontos de referência, para tentar encaixar num esquema, com a consciência de que própria influência dependerá apenas de si mesmo. Neste sentido, cada um é quem decide se ser ativo ou passivo, se vai participar constantemente ou ocasionalmente. Não sendo mesmo um verdadeiro emprego, muitas vezes faz-se o erro de não sentir a necessidade de fazer o máximo, e admito que eu também às vezes senti esse sentimento, mas quando percebi que o principal destinatário dos meus esforços era eu mesmo, compreendi que ser voluntário é um trabalho feito para os outros, onde è o próprio voluntário o que mais ganha.

Nesse sentido, devo dizer que eu tive muita sorte. O contexto associativo em que me encontrei não foi o tradicional. No sentido de que não havia apenas uma associação para realizar as atividades internas, aqui há muitas realidades, cada uma delas especializada no seu setor. Gostaria de agradecer ao Luis, que como excelente coordenador da parceria, deixou-me a liberdade de escolher em qual projeto me envolver.

Por isso gostaria de agradecer ao Manuel com quem trabalhei no projeto creativo e de formação sobre a poluição du plástico. Foi a primeira vez que me vi a trabalhar ao mesmo tempo com crianças e idosos, devo dizer que foi uma emoção única ver e tocar a curiosidade e a energia das crianças ligar-se com a sabedoria e bondade das idosos. O projeto terminou com uma esplêndida exposição artística durante o festival: ver as pessoas apreciarem o trabalho feito com muito empenho e dedicação por parte de todos realmente animou-me.

A Ana foi um ótimo ponto de referência. Estivemos a  organizar um projeto conjunto, que infelizmente tivemos que interromper. E’ com ela que muitas vezes me encontrei a desabafar em alguns momentos difíceis. Obrigado por ser útil e compreensiva, foste muito uma grande ajuda.

Com a Maria João, eu toquei talvez a parte mais divertida, e ao mesmo tempo desafiadora, entre todas as atividades. Nascidos por acaso, os dois jantares vegetarianos, uma com workshop, foram um sucesso. Por isso, gostaria de agradecer à Maria João por me dar a oportunidade não só de deixar as pessoas conhecerem um pouco da minha cultura, mas de me darem a conhecer diretamente a muitas pessoas em Telheiras.

Então gostaria de agradecer a todas as pessoas que trabalham com o refood, especialmente a Susana e a Paula, que oje nao esta, as duas senhoras com quem estivemos a recolher alimentos no continente às sextas-feiras. Nem precisa dizer que honra  foi realizar esta atividade, tão simples, mas realmente fundamental para o bom funcionamento das empresas. Este foi certamente o projeto eticamente e moralmente com maior impacto que espero continue a servir em outros contextos semelhantes. Thanks!

Finalmente tenho que agradecer ao Luis, que agora é amigo antes do que tutor. Com ele além do trabalho de escritório clássico, trabalhei, ou melhor, apoiei a organização do festival. Eu aprendi que organizar um evento como esse não é fácil, porque de fora ele não parece, mas quando de dentro, entende-se quanto trabalho há a fazer. Devo dizer que o Luis foi impecável, como de fato em todo o meu projeto. Apesar de um período cheio de compromissos, não apenas para o trabalho, mas também na vida privada, ele estava sempre disponível. Sempre pronto para me encontrar em qualquer necessidade e sempre tentando me envolver em todas as atividades. Digamos que desde aquela entrevista via Skype para as seleções já faz um tempo, agora posso dizer que encontrei um grande amigo. Muita sorte para a sua esposa Clara e para o que está prestes a chegar e para o futuro deles. Vocês serão uma família maravilhosa.

Um agradecimento geral a toda a parceria local de telheiras, a todas as pessoas com quem também entrei para um poquinho contacto, àqueles que me deram um sorriso mesmo sem saber quem era, àqueles que tiveram paciencia com o meu portugês, àqueles que me deram o seu carinho.

Obrigado, senti-me em casa!

Eu sempre vou guardar uma boa lembrança de vocês.

O testemunho do José

Há quase um ano que cheguei a Lisboa, por tanto o meu SVE está a acabar… ainda que isso não significa que volte para a Espanha…

O Serviço de Voluntariado Europeu foi um desafio que mudou a minha vida. Ter a oportunidade de trabalhar numa associação cultural, com projetos de diferente natureza, me permitiu desenvolver novas habilidades e ideias. O componente humano foi muito importante no desenvolvimento do voluntariado, graças ao inestimável trabalho de orientação que fizeram o meu tutor e o presidente da associação. Mas no dia-a-dia, o trabalho, junto a voluntários de diversas idades e procedências, foi uma aprendizagem e uma vivência extraordinária. A destacar: o Sebastien, voluntário europeu da França que chegou na mesma altura que eu; a Márcia, a Celeste, e o Tiago. 

Desenvolver um novo projeto desde zero contribuiu para que a experiência fosse completa e abrisse novas vias de futuro. Os próximos 9 meses continuarei a trabalhar no mesmo projecto, a Livraria Solidária de Carnide, como estagiário do IEFP.

O acolhimento que teve a Livraria entre os outros voluntários europeus da SPIN foi muito positivo. Desde Maio nós temos reunido na Livraria para partilhar histórias no clube de leitura que a Camilla, voluntária italiana da SPIN, me ajudou à promover. 

Mas o programa Erasmus+ envolve toda a tua vida. O SVE permite conhecer pessoas novas, das quais com alguns farás como uma pequena família ou sereis amigos depois do voluntariado, quer em Portugal quer nos seus paises de origem. Também há muita diversão e festas... mas principalmente durante o SVE poderás viajar e conhecer outra cultura. Durante os ultimos meses visitei Porto, Évora, Sintra, Peniche e a ilha de Berlengas, entre outros lugares. Eu tenho visto que Portugal tem um patrimônio muito rico e que alguns lugares destacam pela sua singularidade.

O dia 2 de Julho foi o meu 29 aniversário, e as pessoas que mais estimo organizaram uma festa surpresa muito engraçada na Casa Anjos. Num quarto, adornado com balões e grinaldas, os meus amigos aguardavam, cautelosamente, a minha chegada com dois bolos, presentes e muito vinho. Será difícil esquecer aquela noite... 

Em conclusão, o SVE significa compartilhar e conviver na diversidade, além de viver cada momento com muita intensidade... De modo que podem acontecer muitas coisas, e a maioria boas.

O testemunho do Nicolò

"Well ... how did I get here?" the Talking Heads sang in Once in a Lifetime, and it's basically how I felt lately, my life has changed so quickly that I did not even have time to think.

Hi, I’m Nico, 27 years old, from a really small town in northern Italy, I consider myself mainly a musician even though I have had many different jobs in my life cause unfortunately music does not pay bills. 

After a 1-year volunteering program in Mozambique i returned to Italy and immediately realized that something was wrong, something was missing and the time only confirmed the need to change and live again that feeling of confusion that accompanies living unknown situations. Lisbon immediately seemed a good choice, I already knew Portuguese and after having lived 26 years in the countryside in Italy plus 1 year in a small village in Africa my desire was to experience life in a European city so within a couple of weeks I chose an EVS project, took part in the interview and after a while I was traveling to Lisbon.

This happened 2 months and a half ago (as usual I’m late) and since the first days i immediately fell in love with this city, a really multi-cultural environment, music, art, lot of concerts and events… I practically found everything I was looking for when I applied for the EVS

The theme and the direction of the project in which I participate with Spin is very similar to the one in which I participated in Mozambique, in that case I was in a school, here in a library in Bairro Padre Cruz, a working-class neighbourhood really far from the centre of Lisbon, the main part consist in a lot of cultural activities with children and maintenance of shared computers.

I spent the first month, as expected, trying to find my role in the library, understand the city and struggling with the Lisbon accent but as time pass everything started to stabilize a bit, in July the summer activities with the children began so every Tuesday I have to organize a music-related activity like dance games or how to built rudimental musical instruments, in the meantime, with the staff, we started to plan a free basic digital literacy course for the people living in the bairro which will most likely take place in October, this will give me the opportunity to stay in contact with the community even more!

So, after these two months, I feel very lucky to have an opportunity like this. Hope for the best in the future with new and exciting projects!

O testemunho da Nerea

And it’s been two months since I arrived to Lisbon… This adventure began back in May and I, Nerea, am the protagonist. I come from Valencia (Spain), a beautiful land bathed by the Mediterranean Sea, full of light, gunpowder and sound. I’m 24 years old and I’m a young biologist, a nature and bird lover.

In May I found a EVS vacancy in Lisbon to collaborate with the Sociedade Portuguesa para o Estudo das Aves, an environmental NGO dedicated to the protection and conservation of wildlife birds. Very excited to work in an association that defends these natural values, I put all my efforts to get that vacancy. With just two weeks in advance they chose me and I accepted without thinking. On June 1, I was on a plane whose destination was LISBOA.

New goals, both professional and personal, made their way when I arrived to Lisbon for the first time. Although also fears and insecurities. The first days were a little harder: I felt out of place, I missed my city, my home, my family… With the passing of days all this was disappearing and I was finding a thousand and one new things and reasons to enjoy this great experience.

I didn’t know much about Lisbon or Portugal; I had only been in Portugal on one occasion. And it could be said that it was love at first sight. The city has an incredible charm. During these two months I have had time to know many places and enjoy the city. And not only the city, the history behind each monument, the art on the street, the fado, the traditional food, and so many things that captive you. Being in SPEA has also allowed me to know other regions of this beautiful country. During these months I visited the northern area of Portugal and I have been doing field work in Miranda do Douro and surroundings. I have also visited Seville, one of the most beautiful cities in Spain, and Malaga and reconnect with friends that I had not seen for a long time. A childhood friend also came to visit me for a few days and, in a couple of days, my family will come to enjoy the holidays with me for a week in this awesome city.

The city isn’t the only good things about this experience. I have met very “fixe” people, as the Portuguese say. Flatmates or workmates, other EVS or other Spaniards, who temporarily or not live in Lisbon. A special mention to my workmate and EVS friend Alicia, companion of battles and adventures during these two intense months.

So, after these two months, I feel very lucky to be able to live and experience like this. I really want to squeeze the months until I leave Lisbon, continue learning Portuguese, meet people, soak up everything I do in SPEA and continue discovering the culture and magic of Portugal.

O testemunho do Sébastien

After 11 months it’s time to make the bilan of my EVS. 

In september when I arrived in Lisbon I didn’t know what will really happen to me. I had learn I was selected to the EVS in Lisbon 10 days before to come. I left France quickly and everythings were going faster. It was the first time I will leave in an other country.  I knew nobody in Lisbon, I didn’t speak any Portuguese words and my English was bad. It was a year rich of emotions. I met many news persons and share a lot of cool moments with them. I hope to stay in contact with some of them. I will try to come back in Lisbon in few months to visit them. 

 I also created a new daily life. I restart to play football often during this year, I discover surf and spend a lot of time to different nice place in my district or in the city in general. I visited  many museums and monuments. I discover the portuguese culture. I took part of many events. 

Lisbon is a wonderfull city. So beautifull, with a particular soul and a rich history. Portuguese people are very nice, kind, simple and welcoming. I loved the sweetness of life. 

I felt me well in Lisbon and I realise my adaptabily in a different context. I know me better and I think I learn a lot personaly. 

It was also very interesting to participate to the project of Boutique Da Cultura. Open the “Livraria Solidaria de Carnide” was a very good experience profesionaly and humanly. I worked with my partner José, a volunteer from Spain, and we were included in a large team. The result of our work is fantastic and we share this experience all together. 

At the end I’m very happy to have participated to this EVS. 

I’m proud of all things that I realise from september until now. I’m a little bit desapointed to finish this adventure but every good thing have a end. Mine is now and I have news projects to realise in an other country and I’m impatient to do it.
