O testemunho No.1 da Jule

Hello, I am Jule, I am 26, and I just arrived in Lisbon for a one year volunteering adventure. It's my first time living in a big capital city, I am very excited. So far the experience has been great! It's my first time living in a big capital city, I have to say that Lisbon is very enjoyable: human sized, with a lot of parks, dogs, beautiful beaches close by, and pretty good weather all year long.

It is not my first time volunteering or living abroad, let's say it's my comfort zone, I have never had the opportunity to settle down in a place for more than a year, and I believe it would take more than that to fully enjoy Lisbon.

I was warmly welcomed by Spin, unsure of my competences, they did the best job valuing my assets and reassuring me. I have been receiving really good feedback from my coworkers. I have a degree in the field of international project management, therefore being part of Spin allows me to discover the day to day tasks of the Spin team. I surely will value this new knowledge in my future professional life.

I also have met a lot of people in a short time, I currently have 5 flatmates, I love it, I've always liked living in a community, and sharing random moments of life. Our flat, provided by Spin, is located in a lovely neighbourhood close to the city center, it's cute and comfortable. My flatmates and I have made it our home. The only thing I could complain about is that the apartment doesn't come with pets!

On-arrival training testimonies - SPIN volunteers (Gaia, Ilaria, Jule, Veronica)

Our SPIN volunteers, Gaia, Ilaria, Jule and Veronica, just completed the mandatory On-Arrival Training organized by the National Agency! Read their honest feedback below:

Ilaria Gallo

Last week I took part in my first volunteer training course in Paredes, near Porto. We were a large group of young volunteers from various parts of Portugal. Each of us brought our own talents, knowledge, challenges and fears with us.

I am very grateful to my trainers for their energy and for creating a safe space for all of us volunteers to share our emotions, experiences, vulnerabilities and lots of laughter. They were very flexible, respecting the pace of the group, and thorough in providing us with all the important and entertaining information.

I loved my group, and we formed some really beautiful connections that I hope to cultivate in the future.

After creating the group agreement, which arose from sharing our common needs, we began the activities. The activities were proposed according to the principles of non-formal education. What a joy! No hierarchies, playfulness, and respect for everyone's needs. I think it's really the best way to learn without even realizing it. A spontaneous collaboration emerged within the group, bringing out everyone's talents and helping us to support each other in our difficulties.

During the open space, many interesting workshops were proposed, involving body, soul and mind, making it a truly rich and intense day.

I feel truly enriched by this experience and want to treasure all the lessons I have learned.

Gaia Mascioli

When I found out I was going to take part in the on-arrival training in Paredes, I felt a mix of excitement and curiosity. Some of my flatmates, already doing their ESC volunteering projects, had told me how meaningful their training had been — a space full of exchange, inspiration, and new friendships. So with high hopes and an open heart, I packed my bag and got ready for this new chapter in Portugal.

We kicked things off with some icebreaking games, which were fun and helped lighten the mood. But I was honestly disappointed when they split us into fixed groups on the very first day, because the group divisions kind of boxed us in and limited those opportunities.

The activities themselves were well-structured and often inspiring. We talked about our ESC experience, the projects we were working on, the challenges we were facing, and practical things like pocket money and insurance. It was a mix of personal reflection and useful info. But what I struggled with the most was the lack of real, deep conversations within my group. Even though the sessions were designed to encourage sharing, I often felt like people were holding back or just not that interested. The discussions stayed pretty surface-level, and the facilitators didn’t really push us to go deeper. I tried to bring in honest questions and open up a bit, but I didn’t always get the kind of response I was hoping for.

The facilitators were kind and well-organized when it came to logistics, but emotionally and relationally, I felt something was missing. The tone of the sessions — sometimes too light or overly playful — felt a bit off for a group of young adults who were already used to responsibility and eager for meaningful dialogue. A lot of the creative activities (like making short videos or building things) were fun to do, but then… nothing. They weren’t watched, discussed, or acknowledged. It felt like the effort we put in wasn’t really seen, and that slowly drained people’s motivation. When your input isn’t valued, it’s only natural to stop feeling as engaged.

One activity that really stood out to me, though, was the “walk and talk.” We walked around the town in small groups and tackled some big questions — about the EU, its global role, what we’re grateful for, what we find frustrating. It was during that walk that I had a powerful exchange that reminded me what feels “normal” or “basic” to us is often far from accessible or guaranteed for others outside EU borders. That was one of the few moments when I truly felt the richness of this multicultural space — where someone else’s story helped me see the world in a different light.

Despite the ups and downs, I still feel that this experience gave me a lot. Could it have been better? Probably. But am I happy I went? Absolutely. Because I’ve realized that things don’t need to be perfect to be meaningful. Sometimes, it’s in the gaps — the awkward silences, the things that didn’t quite work — that we grow the most. I’ve learned that if I want something different, I need to build it myself. And I can. One conversation, one connection, one day at a time. In simple words, I’ve learned not to expect every space to meet my needs perfectly because I can shape my own space and discover my strengths along the way.

Jule Mangani:

From the 14th to the 19th of July my volunteer mates and I went to our on arrival training. We were accommodated in a nice hotel in Paredes, and warmly welcomed with some drinks and some "get to know each other" games. We met about 40 other volunteers who are currently in portugal. We were divided into smaller groups to get to know each other better. Each day we were taken by bus to the place where we had our activities, we spent the 4 days of intense training doing activities : team building, roleplay, games, debates, but we also had more formal moments of information about our rights and duties as volunteers, We had the possibility to share about our volunteering experiences, present our project, discuss about the potentiel tricky situations or conflict that we might have. I was very happy to discover the projects of the other participants, which were really different from each other. I enjoyed the diversity of ages, nationality, and mindsets of our group, we all had the chance to speak our minds about the topics that interest us regarding our experience in Portugal, and it was consistent to hear the opinions of our colleagues and of our trainers.

The formal activities of the week were from 9 to 18 everyday, such a busy programme. If I have to be honest, it was a little too intense for me, but it was also because of my doing since I didn't really use my free time to rest. Unfortunately for me I felt the activities and assignments were a bit "school like", and I have very poor concentration skills and investment motivation in this kind of situation, so the week felt a little long for me!

I did like spending time with new people but such a big group of strangers did generate some anxiety, with the frustration of not getting to know them better in the little time that we had and with the number of participants. As for our stay, I enjoyed the comfy hotel and my very nice roommate, the food was nice, except for the one in the place we had lunch, which was a little lower quality. Regarding the activities themselves, I enjoyed doing some casual little games but lacked motivation in the more demanding exercises. As for the content of the informative moments, I found them a bit outdated for a majority of volunteers who had been here for 5 or 6 months. If I could suggest improvements, I would ask for a session about the funding of Erasmus projects and ESC, in order to understand better what actually allows us to participate in such projects and to participate in such a week. I would also have liked a module on mental health, since I believe it is a relevant topic to be addressed, especially for young people who are for a lot of them living on their own for the first time.

Let's see how the midterm training goes, fortunately it will be shorter and we will have already met some of the participants!

Veronica Hidalgo:

My experience during the arrival training was incredible. I met so many new people, some of whom were residents of Lisbon. During this week, I learned about different cultures, especially Portuguese culture. I also learned about my rights and obligations, how to handle different situations, and how to express my thoughts and fears during my volunteering experience. I loved the experience; it was definitely one of the best weeks so far.

O Testemunho final do Donatien (Viver Telheiras)

Ola a todas e todos ! I’m sadly typing this testimony from my hometown in France where I moved back at the end of August. My last months in Lisbon have been full of memories, let me try to sort them into boxes…

The project in Telheiras …

We made it ! The first session of the local parliament took place in June on the first Sunday of the Festival of Telheiras. Almost 20 people gathered to share about their experiences, the main issues they are daily facing as inhabitants and the priorities to work on. After 1h30, three priorities have been defined : public transport, public maintenance and streets cleanliness. Such an achievement ! It is now time for the inhabitants who are part of the coordinating group to keep up and start organizing people in order to fix issues and implement new projects.

Meanwhile, the project entitled « Da ETPL para o undo » with about 60 high school students full of energy, creativity and sensitivity, ended. After 4 months spent together, thinking about the societal issues they care about, where they stand and how they could take action, three groups selected by a jury have presented their projects they plan to start to tackle racism, homophobia and waste. Congratulations to them ! I’ve gone through it being surprised and amazed all the time by their maturity and their (self)awareness.

My life in Lisbon …

Saudades, saudades and saudades… I couldn’t describe better how I feel now back home. Too many memories I couldn’t sum up but I will keep in mind how much I felt home in Lisbon, how much I love the friends I’ve made, how much I’m missing beaches, sunsets, Lux e MusicBox, pão de deus, pasteis de nata, vinho verde, os maços de Português, o 25 de Abril e as demonstrações.

I feel so grateful for having the opportunity to get up on stage twice to do my rap. In spite of not being understandable for the Portuguese, the public (mostly my friends) warmed me up and I enjoyed it so much! Special mention to my duo with my friend and best dj downtown Catxy !

About my last weeks in Lisbon, I had the opportunity to travel a lot and get to know this country better : Algarve, Alentejo, the natural parks and the mountains. Running up the mountains, I left my ankle behind and sadly had to spend my last weeks in Portugal on my bed… Thankfully, I could enjoy so much my last days with all my friends… I couldn’t have pictured a happier (and sadder) ending

I feel so grateful for having met all these beautiful people from all around Europe and beyond who are now part of my family <3

Até breve Lisboa (mas por favor nunca seja francesa)

O testemunho No. 2 do Donatien

Olá querid@s leitor@s !

Time to look back and sum up my last months in Lisbon… Already half of my project has been achieved! I would focus on the two main ongoing projects I’m coordinating with Luís (my supervisor). Our project to launch the first local parliament in the neighborhood of Telheiras is in progress and going well. In June, the inhabitants will be summoned to attend and take part in the first session of this citizen assembly at the Festival of Telheiras. Until then, we are thinking and designing the project with the local associations, schools and inhabitants themselves.

Meanwhile, we’ve been facilitating workshops with the students of the Escola Tecnica Psicosocial de Lisboa about civic engagement and how increasing their impact on the society about the most meaningful topics to them. At the end of the 4 sessions we had together, all of them thought about a group project to lead. They are now ready to release it to the neighborhood in the public library’s amphitheater.

I also worked on a festival in the north of Lisbon called ComunicALTA
that happened on the 18th of March. Its purpose is to promote all the talents, skills and projects born in this area of Lisbon. This sunny day was really intense and fulfilling for everyone : gigs, dancing shows, skateboarding session, delicious african food and so more…

And above all, I fulfilled one my biggest dreams : going to Nazaré and watching the best surfers coming from all around the world to surf the big waves !

After 6 months here, I feel home thanks to my friends I’m living with and I made, the people I’m volunteering with (portuguese as well as foreigners), the sunsets from the miradouros and beaches, the activist activities I finally started to get involved in about climate and social justice here in Portugal… As the time goes (and the days get longer), my attachment to this city and country is getting stronger and stronger. Next step : being fluent in portuguese... In case I make it, I apologize in advance to the Lisboetas for the extra french guy you’ll have to deal with…

O testemunho no. 1 do Donatien (Viver Telheiras)

Olá querido.a.s leitore.a.s !

I’m Donatien from France. I’ve been now living for 2 months in Lisbon being part of the European Solidarity Corps. I enjoy my life so much here thanks to the people I meet, portugueses and foreigners, the other European volunteers, the people living in the neighborhood I’m working with everyday, as well as the beaches, the « doces » (I actually already tried most of them…) and the meaningful projects I’m involved in.

Let me take you deeper into my projects in the wonderful association Viver Telheiras… This non-governmental organization facilitates community dynamics in the neighbourhood of Telheiras, in Lisbon, interconnecting local population, associations, institutions and economic activities’ interests and needs.

My main activities are volunteering in the ongoing projects like FrutaFeia (delivering baskets of « ugly » fruits and vegetables to tackle food and resources waste) or Refood (collecting and preparing food from supermarkets, restaurants and small shops for people in need) as well as coordinating new projects like workshops in high schools to get students to take action about what matter for them.

To finish with, one example to enable you to get to know more my coordinator, Luís. Only 2 weeks after starting my volunteering, I proposed him a new project, a Local Parliament… the project is launched and we are already working on it : the Telheirenses should be able to sit and debate about the problems they face and the solutions in few months.

O testemunho No. 2 da Cynthia (Boutique da Cultura)

"Olà todos !

Already halfway through my volunteering program with Boutique da Cultura, only 3 months left and I don’t want it to end, My journey with this association started 6 months ago, in November and I already learn so much, about me, about what I love to do but also what I hate. This  experience has been so enriching so far and I hate the feeling I get when I think about the end.

Working as a volunteer with Boutique da Cultura mean having the opportunity to see some theater plays (for free) and to participate in a lot of artistic and sustainable workshop and meet a lot of different people though that. It also mean having the opportunity to try news thing such as being a ceramic trainer (I didn’t know a single thing about ceramic before started the workshop) in a psychiatric clinic. Being able to do that with 15 people with mental disease, to talk to them, to laugh with them, to see the smile and happiness on their face every time they achieve something, is an amazing experience, I always go there with a huge smile on my face and I feel so proud of them and their success.

Doing a European Solidarity Corps is so much than just doing a volunteering project ! Thanks to that experience I get to chance to live crazy adventure with some amazing people from differents countries that I met over the months : going a week trip to Madeira or on a spontaneous weekend in Algarve, having huge dinner and brunch every weeks or party, going to the beach on the weekend. Every week is different, and we never get bored !

But this experience came also with it’s down sometime I miss my family, sometime work can be exhausting or not really interesting but overall doing this project help me find out what I like and what I don’t and open my eyes on a lot of things ! I am very grateful to have the chance of living this experience and I can’t to see what next !

Até a próxima !"

O testemunho final do Victorien (SPIN)

To describe a 12 months experience in a few lines could be an easy job if I wouldn’t have spent in Lisbon at Spin association, and especially in that special period.

My ESC experience started on November the 1 st of 2020 and ended a couple of weeks ago in 2021. Along with this ESC program, I could live a bunch of experiences that absolutely impacted my life on most of the fronts. And I am going to try to share as much meaningful as I can.

Unfortunately, I obviously had to deal with Mister Covid that apparently didn’t want to let us live as we were used to doing. However, the pandemic had, in a way, amplified some periods of my program. During lockdown and restrictions, we couldn’t meet with the other volunteers properly, the work at Spin was hardly makeable and we couldn’t either discover properly Lisbon and Portugal.

During “free time”, in last spring and summer, on the other hand where we could finally meet between all the volunteers, travel all around and achieve some tasks with our organization. And maybe because of those long and tough times, I have the feeling to have experienced these moments way more joyfully, that I hardly still believe it.

First of all, I’ve been really glad to be part of Spin team. The spirit that I could find with my colleagues and especially with my tutor Giulia who has been fantastic and really helpful during my whole experience. She could help through some tough times as well as support some ideas. In the meanwhile, this ESC experience gave so much on the personal aspect. I could embrace a city and a country that totally matches my expectations.

I’m still so amazed to discover Lisbon, it’s a city full of characters, colors, kind people, and opportunities. As well as Portugal, a mind-blowing country for such a small territory, it looks like they are a place to discover in the entire country. With a step back, I think this year has been decisive in a way. I could achieve some personal and professional achievements such as playing music as a DJ in many places in Lisbon and starting doing it kind of professionally. I could start to work properly in English, improve my Spanish and discover the Portuguese language.

On the professional aspect, I’m really glad to have started French classes with Spin team and some volunteers. It has especially given me the courage to start it professionally and I am super proud to be able to keep on doing it as one of my main activities from now on. Also, during the first meetings with Spin, I expressed my willingness to learn and do some video editing. And thankfully Spin, proposed I do a video-volunteers-portrait project where we could create some video content to describe and promote how is it to be a volunteer with Spin. It was a really nice project that I realized with another volunteer. We could do it freely and I’m really happy to have done it from scratch to what it is. I could learn how to use video editing software and I’m once again glad to have added this skill to my list thanks to this ESC program.

Anyway, I think you would have understood that I barely find words to express my gratitude to SPIN and the ESC program. I found myself extremely lucky to have been part of this program and especially
during those tough moments. Extremely lucky to have done it with Spin team and to had the opportunity to achieve some long-time desires. Extremely lucky to have met all these volunteers that became friends and with who I could create strong links. Extremely lucky to have done my program in such a stunning city as Lisbon and such a wonderful one as Portugal.

Cheers SPIN !

O testemunho No. 1 da Cynthia (Boutique da Cultura)

Today is my 20th day in Lisbon.
I still can't believe I am here.

Everything has been going super well so far. All the people I’ve met (other volunteers, ex-volunteer, members of my association) are super nice and I am very excited about those next 9 months!

First of all, let me introduce myself. Hi! My name Is Cynthia and I am a 24 years old girl half French/half Portuguese!

I decided to apply to this project because I just graduated with a master's in culture and communication and I didn’t want to start working in a company 8 hours per day behind a desk, sad and without purpose. I wanted more, I wanted to have a meaningful experience, explore the world and meet new people so this project was perfect!

I started my project in Boutique Da Cultura 2 weeks ago and it’s going super great! I already went to the theater twice with my organization, once here in Carnide and once in Albergaria-a-Vehla.

For now, I am currently working at the Oficina Local in Carnide with Raquel and Joan who are super nice, and we are doing a lot of stuff like candlesticks, jewelry, toys for our Christmas Market which will take place on the 5th and 12th of December in front of the Boutique Da Cultura (you have to come!)

When I am not working, I love to have a walk in the city just to explore, eat Pastel de Nata and watch the sunset (from a miradouro or the beach of course) with my flatmates who quickly became my second family! When I was on the plane and then the taxi to go to the apartment, I was a little nervous to meet them but when I arrived, I saw a sign at the door that said ‘’Welcome to Casa Bernardim” with a drawing of 4 girls, balloons and hearts.

I immediately felt reassured, and I knew that everything would be fine. For the first night, we all had dinner together and talked about everything, it seemed like we had always known each other! Now it's almost a tradition we have dinner together at least once a week to chat and laugh about everything. I really enjoy living in this house with those wonderful girls who had each other's back.

I am so grateful to be here and can't wait to meet other people and learn new things.
