O testemunho No.1 da Alice (Crescer a Cores)

I arrived in Lisbon on September 7th. I remember that the first week here was very difficult: I was confused and disoriented, I didn’t really know why I had decided to leave and abandon my comfort zone, and I was scared of not finding anyone I could truly connect with and of being in a place I didn’t consider my home.

Little by little, however, I pushed myself out of my comfort zone and met many wonderful people. I created my own group of friends to go out and have fun with, and together we try to see as many places in Portugal as possible. I’ve visited cities like Porto and Braga, I went to the Azores, and I did a two-day hike in the Algarve.

Beyond all this, I now consider them an integral part of this experience, and without them, being here wouldn’t be the same.

As for my project, I work in a nursery school called “Crescer a Cores.” When I arrived, I didn’t have many expectations about the service or the educational staff, but after these first months here, I can absolutely say that it is one of the most welcoming and stimulating places I have ever worked in.

Everyone speaks Portuguese, and I am slowly trying to learn it. Despite this language barrier, the educators are all so kind and have always tried in every way to make me feel like part of their family (because it truly feels like one). I remember that during one of my first weeks here, a colleague announced that she was pregnant and told me as if I were an old friend. She hugged me as if she had known me for a lifetime, and that was one of the first moments when I realized that the people there are truly special. It’s a place where you can feel such a strong sense of family that it makes me forget I am far from Italy.

To sum up these first months in Lisbon, I can definitely say that I feel really good, free, and light. I can’t wait to discover what the future holds for this experience.

O testemunho final da Elena (Crescer a Cores)

 Better late than never.

The original version of this story is missing—at least it hasn’t been published yet—but it’s carefully guarded in a folder on my old PC. In this version, I’ll try to be more restrained, less emotional, and focus on unraveling all the tangled memories.

One year. Twelve months in Lisbon.

The longest stretch I’ve been away from home. At first, it was tough, I won’t deny that. But now, it feels like it was meant to be. Like a character from one of those romantic movies, I write while walking in the rain. Damn Lisbon in October. I write and walk, without using the navigator. I must have walked this street a hundred times, back and forth, from home to Graça, from my bed to the Botequim.

I’m walking now near Desgraça, the first social center I discovered here—raw, gritty, alive. Lisbon is full of these spaces, where ideas are traded over a one-euro beer. It’s still raining. I never bought an umbrella, even though winters here can be relentless. “It’s always raining,” they say, and this time, they’re right.

To my left is the cheapest Nepali restaurant in town, Sabor do Nepal. Inside, three Ikea paintings still hang, unwrapped, as if waiting for something. One is a terrifying clown. The walls are painted in loud reds and blues. It was my first Nepali meal in Lisbon. This city is full of places to eat—at a Tasca early in the month, or at an Indian or Thai spot when money runs low… And halal kebabs in Intendente at 4 a.m., all month long.

The 28E eléctrico rattles by, almost soaking me. It’s packed with tourists, even now, in this weather, at this hour. Tourists are always around, and once, I was one of them. But that feeling has faded; for months now, I haven’t identified as a tourist. My parents, my friends, everyone who’s visited—they were tourists, though. I became their guide, showing them around, discovering something new with each group, each time a little amazed, and each time feeling a small pang of regret because the last visitors “missed this.”

I’ve traveled plenty, driving across southern Portugal, exploring those stretches untouched by mass tourism. I woke up to the wild beaches of the Costa Vicentina. I love that place, and the thought of going back one day stays with me, like a promise.

The rain is pouring now, a full storm. I stop under an awning, waiting it out. Next to me, two guys are speaking German, eating ice cream. Lisbon is such a melting pot of lives, people, and cultures. From the young ones chasing their dreams to the elderly Portuguese men who have lived here all their lives. The old men in hats, jackets, and with canes—they’re my favorites on the 747 bus that takes me to work every morning.

Starting work in a new place, not knowing the language, was hard. It was my first time in a school. Just weeks before the end of my project, I realized how far I’d come. Could I have done things differently? Certainly. The early months were difficult; not being able to communicate forced me to live mechanically. Every day felt the same—going out, heading to the Padre Cruz neighborhood, entering Crescer a Cores, doing my tasks: helping, cleaning, playing with the children, helping them take care of themselves, and then cleaning again. It was mechanical, like factory work. Like Charlie Chaplin, lost in thought while chaos happens all around. I could have been bolder, sooner. But I’m glad I am now.

In these last few months, I’ve become more involved, more dynamic, eager to make the most of this opportunity. The responsibilities I’m given now are rewarding, though sometimes overwhelming. Still, I’m happy with what I do.

Lisbon isn’t a city just to be looked at—it’s a city to be lived. It can be so quiet in the winter months, but it bursts to life with summer’s arrival. June. The Santos Populares and endless nights in Graça and Mouraria.

The rain is easing up. It’s time to move on. In Largo da Graça, you can see the road leading up to Alfama. Damas is up there, one of the first places I went dancing. I’ve danced so much in Lisbon—more than anywhere else, with more intensity, for longer hours. I’ve danced to everything: funk, samba, Portuguese music, electronic beats, house, commercial tunes, even powerful rave music.

I turn the corner and arrive at the Miradouro de Graça. You live Lisbon in the streets, but it’s from up here, looking down, that you truly fall in love with it. The Miradouro da Senhora do Monte at night offers a breathtaking view: starting from the left, you see the Castelo de São Jorge, the Tejo, the lights across the river, the Ponte 25 de Abril, and Martim Moniz plaza. All so mismatched, yet so beautiful.

My friends are waiting for me now. There’s sure to be a liter of Vinho Verde and a tosta 3 queijos (that tastes only of garlic) ready for me. What a heavy combo. Tomorrow, I’ll need to wake up for work at Bairro Padre Cruz. Thankfully, one of my roommates will take on the task of waking me.

In many ways, my time in Lisbon can be summarized by this walk—from home to Graça, from my bed to the Botequim. The only street without steps.

Now, the rain falls only from the balconies above. I reach my group—volunteers, friends, lovers, and fellow travelers. My evening begins here.

I go.

Bye, baci stellari,

Ele

Olaaa, here is Elisa from Italy and here is my second testimony.Indeed, I have already had more than half ofthe experience.

I think the longest and most difficult months have now passed. We have faced winter and quarantines and now the Lisbon sun is welcoming us into the liveliest season of the year.I can certainly say that I was sorry not to experience this city in the way it was described to me years ago but in the company of the beautiful people I met, I still had some good experiences.

During the lockdown period the school where I work was closed and this allowed me to have much more free time. I therefore discovered the north of Portugal a little by mainly doing experiences in nature since the possibilities in the city were limited. Long walks were the protagonists of my days.

During this period I also participated in a meeting with other volunteers. It was good there were some good exchanges, we had some good activities. I wasn't happy because I thought an online meeting wouldn't make sense. in the end it worked and I was happy. One day, while walking in the Graça district, I met some of them by chance and this was really a nice surprise. We finally saw each other in the face, we talked and danced together in the square. It was very nice.

When the situation cleared, getting back to work was difficult, returning to schedules and a rigid routine requires commitment and patience. But in the same way, returning to see children grown up and with greater personal autonomy was beautiful and rewarding. I was amazed to see that children of less than one year, after my lasting distance, immediately recognized me on my return. Now the school I work for has asked us to restore a mural they have had for a few years, this will be a great opportunity to break the routine by alternating work a bit.

The last news that I want to tell you is that now I am on the train traveling to Viana Do Castelo, where the first meeting with other volunteers will be held!

Next time I'll tell you how it went!

See you soon. Elisa.

O testemunho No. 2 da Perrine (Crescer a Cores)

Here's Perrine. Here we go, almost 6 months later.

First of I have to say I fell in love with this beautiful city and I am very grateful for this amazing experience. The last months for sure have been challenging but also rewarding in some points and although it wasn't always easy I never stopped enjoying my time here and keeping a positive attitude facing this situation.

So what happened in these last months ? Since portugal was in a strict lockdown for three months and everything including schools were closed I unfortunatly could't work all this time. But with my flatmates we tried to make the best out of it and shared a lot of time together and enjoyed for ex. long walks trough the city, cooking or working out together.

Back to work.
To be honest first I was not that trhilled to go back to work after this long break but in the end it was nice to see the kids again and get back to a routined day. The babies I work with are 1 to 2 years old so after 3 months not seeing them, I could definetely see some physical growth and development progress for most of them.

After working some weeks of working finally we got to de desconfinamento here in Portugal ! Says that shops, cafés, restaurants etc. were finally reopening again and that you can socialise and enjoy this beautiful city and its surroundings with its beautfiul people. I especially enjoy my time here right now since I am able to do stuff outside again and can discover the city all over again and also its surroundings with the lovely people I met here !

Altough we still live in the middle of a pandemic and experience our ESC stay here in a different way than others. We certainly still make the best out of it and try to enjoy it at its fullest. I am really looking forward for the coming months !

Até logo ! Beijinhos:)

O testemunho no. 1 da Elisa (Crescer a Cores)

Olá a todos, sou Elisa, tenho 24 anos e sou italiana.

Hi, my name is Perrine I am from a little town in France right next to the german border and i will be volunteering in Crescer a Cores this year. I left France on the first of november just a few days after the beginning of the second national lockdown wich is kind of a weird feeling but I am happy to be here and curious about this year! Arriving in my new home I was welcomed by my new flatmates Clara and Angela from Italy and Polina from Russia. I rested a bit because I arrived pretty early in the moring and afterwards we walked a bit around our neighbourhood and went for a drink with other volunteers in the city center. Back in the apparment we met our new flatmaye Lucia from Italy.

After this first long and nice day I taught I will directly begin to work the day after wich wasn't the case and a nice surprise. We had a few days to discover the city and settle down in our new home.

Clara, Lucia and I explored the different neighbourhood as Alfama, Bica, Bairro Alto, Baixa etc.

We walked a lot, enjoyed the sunny days, took the old Tram and I tried my first pastei de Nata.

The first impression of the city was lovely, I really like the architecture, the feeling you have while walking trough the little streets and of course the weather! I am pretty sure I will fall in love with this city.

After some days of exploring the city we had our welcome day at the Spin's office where we met the other new volunteers. We had a delicious vegan lunch, got all the needed information from Giulia and could explore a little the neigbourhood of Bairro Padre Cruz where I will work.

After the weekend I had to take a Covid test in order to begin to work, the test came out negative and i could get to work at the creche! In the first days I met my coworkers and the kids, tried to get a picture of where I will work the next year and wich tasks I will have. The atmosphere at work is nice and I am getting into it step by step, for now I enjoy working with the children and I am curious of whats gonna come my way the next months!

O testemunho No 3 da Elena ( Crescer a Cores)

My year of European voluntary service is almost over and it has been full of important changes. Despite a year that made everyone's life different and that for a period even blocked it, I will focus on what were the personal and inherent changes in my year here in Portugal. It was a slow and not immediate path, made by moments of waiting, reflection and action. I started and probably learned to love myself more, to look inward and take care of myself. All this was made possible by starting to do a bit of physical work out every day,  talking more than one language in one day, choosing people that made my time better and created a small reality that I felt comfortable in.
Due to the lockdown I was only able to resume the project at the kindergarten at the beginning of September, but despite this, even if the time was less, it was nonetheless formative. In this time I realized there was more balance between responsibility and voluntary work, I felt more useful and integrated, both as regards the relationship with the children but also with the educators. Even if we hadn't seen each other for a long time, we immediately re-established an even more confidential and playful relationship, probably also thanks to the improvement of my Portuguese language skills. I felt really comfortable and I found on their part a great willingness and generosity towards me. My project colleague and me are very grateful for the lunches time shared with them during special celebrations. The moment I appreciated the most and in which I found the most connection with the children, was when I put them to sleep during the afternoon nap, taking off their shoes, tucking them in the blankets. I think I have grown fond of them and that I will miss them all.

Lisbon wasn't love at first sight, I needed my time to love it. I think it was a feeling related to how I felt. The better I started feeling, the more I started loving it. Long walks through the city, trips out of town to discover new paradisiacal places, art visits, have made this feeling stronger and more solid. Although it has been an uncertain and worrying year, this EVS and Lisbon have made it safer and have given me time to reflect and manage time in alternative ways.

O testemunho da Lara No. 3 (Crescer a cores)

A year can change many things. I arrived in Lisbon in November last year, unaware of everything that would have happened, afraid but strongly motivated and i'm leaving it richer, stronger, more confident than myself and with a wealth of incredible memories. A year full of emotions and sensations: happiness, euphoria, motivation, amazement but also anger, sadness, fatigue. Because getting out of the comfort zone is not easy at all. One day you are at home and the other one you find yourself in a country where you do not speak the local language and do not even understand it, where every person you meet is a new person who will perhaps become part of your life or maybe not, but meanwhile you discover it by knowing it. A country where you will probably share a house with strangers and have to start a project working in a new context. This is scary, the uncertain is very scary. I remember that before arriving in Lisbon i was so scared that i made a list of reasons not to go anymore. Fortunately i decided to live that fear, feel it all and take that step to go further. All the fantastic experiences i had this year, all the emotions, all the smiles... Icould not have lived them and i would not feel as i do now: happy and satisfied. Happy for all the wonders i have seen, for the places i fell in love with, happy for the wonderful work experience with my children and with a team of strong, wonderful women who inspired me and treated me like a daughter, i will never stop thanking them. Happy because i felt at home in a city where i was not born, happy for the people i met on this journey, without them this experience would not have been the same. Some have remained in my life, others have not, but in one way or another everyone has left something. With some of them i shared a lot, i shared a completely unscheduled lockdown. We underwent this situation together and we came out strong, we supported each other and we did everything possible to make a trauma an experience to remember also positively, because i will remember in this way... a moment in which i created very strong bonds, real relationships that do not stop at the first obstacle, which have gone beyond the surface and will be able to overcome the distances.

So many emotions in a year, with the wonderful Lisbon background which is also the author of these emotions... It is difficult to explain what you can experience at night admiring the view from the Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, and why you will miss the azulejos and sidewalks of the city center, or because you absolutely have to say goodbye to the Tejo before leaving...Já estou com saudades mas não é adeus minha Lisboa.

O testemunho da Lara No. 2 (Crescer a Cores)

Six months have passed since the beginning of this experience and many things have happened. Regarding my project, which consists of working with a Portuguese association that owns a kindergarten and also on projects which support the community of the neighborhood where it is located. I started to integrate more with the group of colleagues, who had already proved available and collaborative. A beautiful understanding was born with them, in which I feel free to express my thoughts and my doubts and that makes me feel part of a group. I feel more confident about my skills that i am acquiring here in this project, and this gives a lot of satisfaction.

The relationship has changed, not only with colleagues but also with children, with whom we have learned to know each other, creating a relationship of trust fundamental in the relationship between adult and child in an educational environment. We have fun together playing and discovering the world. We started doing different activities, we went to the theater to see a show for children and we participated in the neighborhood carnival. The latter was a truly beautiful experience; we had fun together in a park dancing listening to music with other children. Thanks to my coordinator, my project also includes my participation in support activities for families, in a neighborhood very close to our school, making this experience less monotonous, making me know new realities and increasing my skills. I expanded my social network, I made friendships with fantastic people and I started traveling to Portugal, which left me speechless with its wonders. Today I write from my room because we are being quarantined due to the unexpected spread of the Coronavirus that is affecting many countries around the world right now. We have been in this state for over a month and certainly I did not expect to experience this in a country that was not mine. Despite the distance, despite the concern, almost all of us, volunteers, here in Lisbon, have decided to stay and continue this experience here, with the support of our association that helps us. We continue to carry out some activities that we can do from home and that continue to motivate us and, thanks to the support of volunteers and friends, we try to better enjoy this experience that is happening to us and for which we were completely unprepared, in the hope that everything can return to normal as soon as possible.
